How to apply cgm patch that lasts 14 days

Applying Not Just a Patch CGM patches correctly is the key to getting the full 14 days of wear time. Proper patch application keeps your sensor secure, improves comfort, reduces skin irritation, and minimizes the chance of early lifting or your sensor coming off completely.

As the CEO of NJAP and longtime patch wearing diabetic – let me guide you through the few simple steps to apply your patch. Below is a quick guide to prepping your skin, positioning your patch, and getting the longest possible adhesion.

Thankfully, it only takes a few simple steps to apply your patch. Below is a quick guide to prepping your skin, positioning your patch, and getting the longest possible adhesion.

How to Apply a CGM Patch Step-by-Step

When you receive your CGM patches, follow the instructions carefully to apply the patch over your CGM sensor. Here’s a step-by-step guide to properly applying a CGM patch:

  1. Before inserting your CGM sensor, clean your skin. Wash with soap and water or clean with an alcohol wipe.
  2. Make sure your skin is completely dry before you insert your sensor.
  3. Follow the instructions from your CGM company to insert your sensor. Make sure to press and smooth the adhesive so that it adheres completely.
  4. Select a patch that is best suited to your CGM, activities, and style
  5. Peel off the paper backing on your overlay patch. Carefully place it over your sensor.
  6. Press and smooth the adhesive firmly for 30-60 seconds. And allow 1 hour for the adhesive to set.

CGM Patch Expert Application Tips

I have had diabetes for 20 years, and built Not Just a Patch brand around protecting CGMs and improving the wear time of sensors. Here are my expert tips to improve the longevity of your CGM patch.

    • Choose the right placement. Avoid placing your patch on damp or irritated skin or skin folds. Choose a dry, flat area for your CGM sensor and patch. Many people use their arms or stomach.
    • Prep your skin. Prepping your skin before you place your CGM sensor and overpatch is key for long-lasting adhesion. Try removing hairs from the area of the future sensor/patch site. Then wash and dry the area completely before placing your sensor.
    • Use high-quality products. You can use a product like SkinGlee wipes to remove sweat, lotion, or oily residue from your skin. If you want some extra sticking power, use SkinGlu adhesive wipes. They create a tacky skin barrier to help protect your skin and keep your sensor in place.
  • Select your patch. We have a range of patches specifically designed to match your CGM and your lifestyle. Be sure you have the right patch for your needs. If you are unsure please reach out to one of our fantastic team members for advice.
  • Apply your patch carefully. Don’t stretch your skin, or your patch will wrinkle. Be careful not to touch the adhesive when applying your patch. And try your best to place your patch correctly. The use of a mirror can help you if your sensor is in a hard to reach spot.

14-Day CGM Patch FAQs

Do I apply the CGM patch before or after the sensor?

NJAP Original CGM patches are designed to put over your CGM sensor. After inserting your sensor, simply apply the patch over it. You can also use an adhesive glue, like SkinGlu, before inserting your sensor for a stronger adhesion.

How do I keep the patch from wrinkling or bubbling?

Try to apply it smoothly, starting from one end and smoothing it down. Be careful not to stretch your skin when you apply the patch, or it will wrinkle once you let go. Once the patch is on, smooth it out the best you can, and press the adhesive down in a circular motion so that it sticks properly.

Can I touch the adhesive with my fingers?

Avoid touching the adhesive with your fingers as much as possible. Our patches have a paper backing that you can remove in two parts so that you don’t have to touch the adhesive. You can remove one piece of the backing, press down half of the adhesive, and then peel off the other side and gently apply it to the skin.

Should I press the patch down after applying it?

Yes! Pressing down the patch will help it to adhere. Make sure to press it down all the way around and all the way to the edges. This will help prevent it from lifting or bubbling.

How long should I wait after applying the patch before exercising or showering?

You should wait at least a couple of hours before showering or exercising after applying your patch. This gives it adequate time to adhere to your skin before it’s exposed to any moisture from water or sweat.

Can I replace the patch without removing the CGM sensor?

Our CGM patches are made to last for the full length of the CGM sensor session, so there’s no need to replace your patch. But if you’d like to switch it up without changing your sensor, our Original Patches are made so that you can replace them without damaging your sensor. The center of the patch doesn’t adhere to the CGM sensor, so it’s easy to peel off the patch while keeping the sensor in place.

On a personal note

I started the company because I had a problem, and that problem was that my CGM was getting loose when I was swimming. I was fashioning my own patches. I woke up one morning, and I thought maybe other people might like a patch to protect their CGM too.    Fast forward seven years, and we now sell in 65 countries. We are proud to say that we encounter people on the street wearing our products. That is still one of the most delightful experiences and proudest moments.   The community connection part was not something I planned for or thought about. It’s been an added bonus and just the realisation that these products matter. That people wearing a CGM like them need them, they use them, they look forward to getting them, and healthcare professionals like to recommend them. It still probably hasn’t fully sunken in that we actually make a difference, but we do. We make a difference every day now, and that reflection is what makes it worthwhile
